Bush lemon/mandarin

    4 responses

Copie starts with ...
Tree looks like a bush lemon and outside of fruit looks like bush lemon.
However peel it back and it smells, segments and tastes more like a mandarin. What could it be? Could something have happened whilst grafting?

Is it grafted ? Bush Lemons are usually seedlings, and as seedlings they are variable. Bush Lemons are Lemon X Mandarin, so its usual to get bits of both, and some trees may have fruit more like lemon, or others more like mandarin.
Another possibility is Rangpur Lime, also a very similar Lemon X Mandarin, the fruit more like sour mandarins. Both have been used as rootstocks, so could take over from a weak or failed graft.

My Rangpur limes are tiny compared to a lemon or mandarin, and extremely sour. Doesn't sound like mine.

Hi Julie thats interesting. There are quite a few types of Rangpur, the main one I've seen finally ends up as a 4 to 5 cm puffy skin sour/slightly bitter mandarin.
These are much nicer at 2cm just before they change to orange.
How similar is yours ?

Mine are around 2.5 cm. the tree is seedling grown, not from cuttings, so that may make a difference. It has a smooth skin, definitely not puffy. Maybe the particular variety of mandarin they crossed with would account for variations?

My plan was to make marmalade, but they are quite small, so I have been saving them in the freezer till I have enough. It is growing in a large pot, so will never be a full-sized tree.
