Fruitylicious1 says... Hi Sharwill, Sharwill avocados are of the Guatemalan race (B type), second only to the hardier Mexican variety of avos when it comes to chill factor tolerance.By the way, Sharwill is an Australian bred avo originating from Redlands Bay, Qld in 1951. Some growers have reported that mature Sharwill avos can only withstand winter temperature in between -1C to -4C. And young avos will surely struggle during winter even with ample protection. Anyway, if you have a micro-climate prepared for your selected avo variety you can give it a go. As per usual plant it in a north facing zone close to a brick wall or building sheltered from the frosty antarctic blast during winter. The young plant should have a robust structure or overhead frame ready for winter protection to cover the young plant. For further frost protection you can also rig a heat lamp under the cover and wrap the trunk with sponge foam for added protection. Be ready for the long haul ahead until your baby plant becomes a sturdy young adult that can withstand temps below -4?, maybe 4-5 years if you are that keen to see it through.
