Can Rollinia's grow in pots? (forum)

8 responses

Rebecca starts with ...
I have been given a Rollinia (luv the fruit). I gather it's been grown from seed and in the ground will get to 30'(which I don't want or need). Is there a grafted variety I can pot up & fruit reasonably quickly? Can I get hints from those who have grown successfully? The spot would be full sun with no frost.
Many thanks.

Perfect Rebecca. Daleys have a grafted and seedling variety. Here is a video of a Rollinia grown in a pot at Daleys.

I have both, they're very fast growers. The grafted one continuously flowered during it's very first season. The seedling variety has been in the ground for two years now, I'm expecting flowers in probably another season or two.

Hello John
I've since found out the tree is a seedling & the offer is to graft it when it gets bigger - I'd rather get a grafted on e to start off straight away. How big will this grow? I'm in a surburban garden (just under 1/4 acre-trying to go maintenence free-moving from No Digs to raised gdn beds). How often would I need to upsize-how long to fruit-do i need a second tree to assist pollination? etc?
Many thanks..

Believe me, You will have much less of a maintainence issue if you plant it in the ground. Once established they can be treated virtually as maintainence free if you want. You can spend as much or as little time on them as you like .

Hi Rebecca - I dug my 2m Rollinia up last year and put it into a 35L tree sack. Just recently I managed to kill it - overwatering after a heat wave that dried it out too much :-( I am really mad!
Anway - it does get quite big, quite quickly - when I dug it up from the orchard it had only been in a year and it had already put down a very impressive tap root....I suspect they would get quite root bound in a pot before long? (mine was a seedling though)
That was just my experience with a pot though...(my other bagged fruit trees all survived the same experience, at the same time...)

Hi Amanda

I have the opportunity to use 44 gal drums cut in half & ends cut out
Thanks for your insight re Rollinia.
I see lots of people use tree bags - there's obviously soomething to it.What's the spread of the trees you're familiar with?

Thank you.

Hi Rebecca - I like the tree bags because they have handles! :) ....but also because they can be cut with a stanley knife or such - making it very easy and less stressful on the plant when it comes time to replant them in the ground. There is a list of my plants in my edibles section - but I am not an experienced grower of sub-tropicals...I have many of them in tree bags at present though - as we hope to relocate soon (so they have been dug up ready to go)

I've read about orchidists planting their trees into tree bags (Daley's sell them here in three sizes called Bonsai Bags) and then planting the whole bag and tree in the ground to keep everything managable.
