Ceylon Hill Gooseberry - Leaf Problems

    6 responses

Hi all,

As you can see, the leaves on my Ceylon Hill gooseberry plant don’t look healthy.

If any one knows what this is and how to treat it, it will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Dwain

Just had a look at mine Dwain and some of the leaves look much the same as your pics.

On the whole mine, and yours, look quite healthy.

Unless it starts to spread to the entire plant and leaves fall off all over, then it's probably just natural leaf attrition.

Not overwatering? or underwatering?

There is a reason why some fruits are rare! CH berry is not to every ones taste. It is sort of gummy like okra,if you know what I mean.

Hi Lisa,

I took a leaf sample to Bunnings and spoke to the lady at the nursery.

According to her the soil in my pot is dry and not receiving much water, even though I water it 2-3 times a week. She suggested that I change the soil and water it well with a wetting agent.

I followed her advice and for a week I didn’t notice any further change in the plant – but only recently the problem has returned!

You’re probably right, it could be just natural leaf attrition.

Gummy, yuck. I hope I like them better when the plant finally produces some fruit.

The soil shouldn't be dry with watering 2 - 3 times a week! Perhaps it's lacking organic matter.

Do you check the potting mix by digging down with your finger after watering? We often think we're doing a good job watering but can be in for a surprise when check the moisture - water can just run out of pots without "sticking".

If growing in pots you need quality mix to start with (Searles for instance) and regularly (twice a year) add something like Organic Xtra and top up with quality potting mix.

There are leaves on my Ceylon Hill Gooseberry that are turning red all over. The colour starts out as small red spots to start with. Could this be a mineral deficiency or something more sinister? Thank you.
