coconuts

They can be grown in Sydney in very, very limited circumstances. i remember seeing a clip on Burke's Backyard years ago about some coconuts growing successfully on the harbor. They have to be in full sand and planted in sand to not get wet in winter. They grew slowly, never fruited, but did OK. Coffs is barely warmer than Sydney and has cooler winters (believe it or not) statistically then the inner city of Sydney so if they grow there here should be OK. But remember once you leave the coast and CBD, the surrounding temps of Sydney drop considerably and they will die

Nah, it's about the heat more than anything else. Any amount of frost will kill them. Dwarf malays do well in brisbane, depending on the locale.

Don't know about the salt water. They just need to be dry in winter and preferably out of winds. But only work in the CBD to about Leichhardt/Petersham, and even then it would depend on microclimate, not all spots would be suitable. Anywhere west or south or north of these suburbs and they wouldnt work because you are out of the built up heat island effected places

They don't need salt water but they are not fans of extended periods of cold and low humidity away from the coast.
