Picked up a kilo of Cox's Orange Pippin in Amsterdam ;beautiful fruit etc ;taste was so bad I had to throw it away. Assuming the Brits are not crazy ,what is wrong. Has anyone had the real thing?

I am English, I am sure I will have had them at some point or other, but I am not a huge apple fan.... So can't really comment. Pink lady are the only ones I really like.

Perhaps they were just old kert. I have had dud apples before - they are horrible.

Cox's orange pippin is one of the most delicious apples. I love Gala, or Royal Gala, as it has a similiar flavour. I believe Cox is one of the parents.

A grower of heritage apples told me once that the 'Cox's Orange Pippin' needs a cold winter to develop the best flavour.
ie. colder than just the chilling requirements to flower and set fruit.
Without it the cold they can be mediocre.
I've never had the opportunity to try one.

It's the kind of apple some people don't like. I grew one and my father told me it was the most rubbish apple he ever grew. Turned out in the end that it's one of my favorites so now I eat the fruit from both my tree and his :)
