M Nash starts with ... Can I mix heirloom watermelon, Zucchini, Squash and pumpkin in the same area without problems if I want to keep the seeds? Thanks Zucchini Tond di Piacenza (Cucurbita Pepo) Squash Patisson Golden Marbre Scallop (C Pepo) Pumpkin Buttercup (C Maxima) Pumpkin Shishigatani (C Moschata) Watermelon Orangeglo (Citrullus Valgaris) I can spread/split into two groups about 100 metres apart I also have another watermelon "Kolb's Gem that I would like to start but,, again I can only get them 100m apart from the Orangeglo. I am only really worried about the watermelons, Pumpkins and Squash. I sow up my own organza bags for my fruit trees so you idea of keeping one or two hand pollinated and pure could be done. Thanks for any further thoughts | About the Author MNash1 Terranora Northern NSW 12th September 2011 3:10pm #UserID: 2892 Posts: 292 View All MNash1's Edible Fruit Trees |

Charles cant spell says... This should answer your questions and more. http://www.ag.purdue.edu/counties/allen/Documents/Hort%20ACH31%20Cross%20Pollination%20in%20Cucurbits.pdf Great table, basically those in the same family pepo, maxima, etc will cross if the bees cross them. So you might need to mark and hand pollinate and exclude (at first light) if you have two of the same family. I.e. just hand pollinate those you are saving for seed, eat the rest :) | About the Author Charlesstillcantspell1 Perth Innaloo 13th September 2011 10:57pm #UserID: 2742 Posts: 411 View All Charlesstillcantspell1's Edible Fruit Trees |

jakfruit etiquette says... 100 metres is probably ok, I cant remember if its the reccomended distance, but it depends a bit on what's in between, and if bees are going to be able to fly directly between the two patches to work the flowers... it may be unlikely??? Also early and late flowering vars of the same spp may not be able to cross if the flowering doesn't overlap. Bagging and hand pollinating is the only sure way, to prevent crossing, you have to bag both the M and F flowers you want to use. | About the Author 15th September 2011 2:28am #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |
