Dabbling with Dacrycarpus

    0 responses

Linton starts with ...
Recently I had the opportunity to sample a few Kahikatea berries which I found to be somewhat sweet and a little juicy, even though the berries are quite tiny and tedious to harvest. So I have been dabbling with the idea of trying to grow a tree or two of Dacrycarpus dacrydioides, also known as Kahikatea in NZ.

Unfortunately Dacrycarpus dacrydioides is dioecious and the only local nursery that stocks them has cutting grown plants that are all clones from the one parent plant. This means that they are unlikely to produce the delicate little Kahikatea berries and I would need another tree from different parentage to facilitate pollination. Please advise if anyone knows of other sources of this species, either plants or cuttings. Growing it from seeds would be a last resort as they are reported as being difficult to germinate and can take more than 1 year to sprout. Thank you and have a nice day!
