Dwarf Fig Brown

    2 responses

Last year the leaves went mottled, brown/yellow and finally dropped. I think now it is because not enough water (I since bought a moisture meter). However I am astounded - I give it 20 litres (2 x watering can) and a day later the meter tells me it is dry. Is this normal? I am concerned if I go away over summer and it requires watering every day. Any advice appreciated.

Is it in a pot or in the ground? If in a pot, the potting mix quality is important. I have found some cheaper brands do not retain moisture and drain away too quickly.

You can also get problems with water draining away too quickly in the ground depending on the structure of the subsoil. In that case, seeing it is a dwarf fig, you would get better results growing it in a pot with good potting mix because you can control the drainage more effectively.

I purposely put it in the ground as I thought a pot risks drying out more quickly! I added blood and bone to soil when I planted and give it liquid fertiliser regularly.

I don't really want to dig it up now it is established. But having to water every day seems ridiculous for something in the ground.
