edible figs

have had very little success getting my figs to bear fruit. I have grown them from cuttings that grew in the granite belt. The trees grow prolifically but produce few fruit. Am I growing the wrong variety for this area?

Hi Nev

There are a few reasons why figs fail to produce the goods.

1. Normally, figs start to fruit at the age of two years but, some figs takes five to six years to fruit. There's nothing you can do if it's age related matter except to wait.

2. Too much nitrogen - if given too much nitrogenous fertilizer fig trees will produce a lot of lush foliage but no or less fruit. Lessen the nitrogen and add phosphorus instead.

3. Too much or too little water.

4. Some fig trees require pollination to produce fruit (Smyrna and San Pedro).
