Etrogs in Brisbane

Wanted - Etrog seeds or seedlings

Hi,

I live in Brisbane and have been chasing an Etrog tree for 4 or 5 years now. I came across a discussion that dates back several years regarding some forum members growing Etrog from seed in Melbourne and Sydney. Is it possible to obtain one of these seedlings or some etrog seeds? Do any members have etrogs in Brisbane?

Kand regards

David

I recently saw a grafted Etrog down here at a nursery in melbourne but they dont freight - visit your good local nurseries as they are being produced - or just phone them up?

Hi Markmelb, have tried all the local nurseries over the past 5 years with same result, sorry we don't have citrons or etrogs. I have never seen an etrog tree and all references to suppliers or people growing trees have been from Vic or NSW. I am waiting for a response from Engels Nurseries. They have etrogs but don't ship so need to find a Engels dealer in Brisbane (if one exists). Any chance you could buy one and post to Brisbane. I would of course cover all costs plus some. Have checked quarantine and Vic to Qld is fine (not vice versa though!).

Not too long ago, I bought seeds off a guy in Israel who said the seeds were from ungrafted Etrog trees that were planted during the reestablishment of Israel. The seeds were different to normal citrus; they had a sort of furry, velvety sort of shell rather than a smooth seed coating. They all germinated but I gave them all away and kept only one.
He was selling them on eBay.
Unfortunately, the Etrog I had from Mark was taken out by rabbits (we have always been rabbit free here). They were even ring-barking my older citrus trees. I now put blood and bone around the base of all my trees to keep the rabbits away. It works very well.

I have a three or four year old Etrog seedling which you are welcome to - I should have planted it a while back and it's pretty pot bound, but if you can give it a good home I'd be happy to give it away, it's about a metre tall in a grow bag. I imagine you could shape it once the growth takes off. There is also a grower closeby I can get seeds from every so often.

I have a 15cm seedling etrog plant I grew from a seed from a etrog fruit, the plant is a bit snail eaten but with love I am sure it would thrive, I could remove most of the dirt from around the roots and post. allydalton(dot)sculpture(at)gmail(dot)com

phil@tyalgum - Please don't jump to conclusions because there is no response within an arbitrary time frame set by yourself. Yes, I am interested and thank you for responding. I just need to work out the easiest way to get to it! If still available would I be able to pick it up on the weekend of the 12/13th November? Thanks

David

David that weekend is clear for me so will keep the plant for you. I may take a couple of pics first to see if it is suitable, I imagine it will look much healthier when planted out. Might take you to the local fruit stall where you can pick up the odd Etrog fruit on the display stand.
