KiwiDi starts with ... We have a property in South West Rocks almost on the coast (mid north coast NSW). We have an area along a fence line of approx 12 metres where we propose to plant a feijoa hedge. We anticipate at 1 metre apart, we would require about 13 feijoa trees. I am from NZ and grew up with these delightful fruits, looking forward every April-May to the bountiful crops and especially the jam making, cakes and crumbles - endless uses, and oh the delicate aroma! The fence line where we propose to plant is on a gentle slope, with good drainage and there is sun for a good half of the day. We are looking for a fast growing variety similar to those in NZ (Apollo or Unique maybe) - how long before we can expect fruit? What is recommended and when would they be available for delivery and planting? Also, what would be the cost of delivery to South West Rocks please. We would appreciate any further advice or recommendations regarding the growing of feijoas here. Thank you | About the Author KiwiDi SOUTH WEST ROCKS,2431,NSW 12th May 2020 1:52pm #UserID: 22702 Posts: 2 View All KiwiDi's Edible Fruit Trees |
Edward3 says... Hi. I suspect you meant to send this to Daleys for an answer, so you should use their "Contact Us" email option. I agree feijoas are great, but be aware that fruit flies are a problem on the coast - they will spoil your fruit. As for how long to fruit - my Unique fruited after just 1 year. | About the Author Edward3 CARLINGFORD,2118,NSW 15th May 2020 3:41pm #UserID: 1655 Posts: 172 View All Edward3's Edible Fruit Trees |

KiwiDi says... Hi Edward, Thankyou for your response. I really appreciate your input, I have to admit I was a little confused as to how to communicate directly with Daley’s. I thought the email section was for actual orders, as it appeared they encourage members to share info. Anyway, good to have that clarified. May I ask you whether you ordered cuttings or seedlings and how many plants you put in. I am intrigued about the Unique as it was my understanding that they were not as vigorous as the Apollo and took 2 years to fruit. As for the fruit fly....yes that is a concern, we didn’t have those issues in NZ. I have been researching the use of chilli and garlic spray as a pest control. | About the Author KiwiDi SOUTH WEST ROCKS,2431,NSW 16th May 2020 2:20pm #UserID: 22702 Posts: 2 View All KiwiDi's Edible Fruit Trees |
