Fig tree

Hi, after acting like a stick in a pot all winter my fig tree has suddenly burst into life (yay). But there is only growth out of the top - is this a concern or is it normal for new plants. Also there are leaves sprouting from low down below the soil - should I remove these?

Thanks

Hi Wilbs,

Fig goes dormant in winter so all leave drop. It becomes active in spring until late autumn. the first leave usually appear at the top then side shoot and some come up under ground. All pretty normal. To increase production usually I keep 3 branches in the 2nd or third year. Thus it is too early to remove any shoots at this stage. Cheers

Hello again, thanks for your Previous advice. The fig is going great guns. I just wanted to confirm that I should leave the growth coming from around the base of the plant? I thought I read somewhere that these shoots should be trimmed early on.

Many thanks,

Peter

Your plant is still young, you should keep all the shoots until 1-2 years old. if you don't want it you can remove them later by propagate cuttings or marcot. Cheers
