MyrtleTurtle says...
BOTANICAL NAME: Piper sarmentosum
COMMON NAMES: wild pepper, kadok, bai cha plu,cha plu, bai som phou, sirih dudu, daun kaduk, betel pepper, la lot
FAMILY: Piperaceae
ORIGIN: Thailand and Vietnam

Not to be confused with Betel Nut (Areca catechu).
Also not to be confused with Betel Pepper (Piper betle) which is chewed with betel nut, though the species are similar.

Betel leaf is used in both South-East Asian cooking and traditional medicine. In Thai cuisine, the leaves are used to wrap miang kham, a traditional snack; they are also one of the ingredients of the Kaeng khae curry of Northern Thailand. The curry is named after these leaves, which are known as khae in Northern Thailand. In Laotian cuisine, it is eaten as part of a salad. In Malay cuisine it is shredded for ulam, a type of Malay salad.
