CJ2 starts with ... Hi, my nelly Kelly grafted passionfruit appears to be rotting at steam near graft? It is still growing vigorously and currently still producing some fruit (lots this past summer) but older leaves are yellowing and dying, sometimes starting with a spot that spreads. Lots of new green growth though. 1.5 years old. Is this a disease that I can treat, normal development or do I need to remove? Please help? Thanks!

Fruitylicious1 says... Hi CJ Your Passionfruit vine might be infected with collar rot disease caused by the pathogens (haematonectria haematococca & or fusarium solani) which are very difficult to treat specially in their advance stages. Your plant doesn't know that it is already dead. It's just going through the motions of survival mode. It's still normal for girdled trees or plants to exhibit flushes of growth sometimes even up to two springs but, eventually they will succumbed to their grave often fatal disease. Because even though the bark (phloem) is already eaten or dead but the xylem, the innermost tissue which transport water and nutrients up the stem is still largely intact which is keeping it alive ATM, but ultimately the inevitable will happen - death of the victim. I am sad to say that it might be too late for your vine to comeback from the dead. Don't plant any susceptible vines or trees at or near the infected soil because sometimes the pathogens can survive for years in one area just waiting for their next victim to come. The use of disease (collar rot and fusarium) resistant stock is the best way to combat this problem because sometimes the use of chemicals are also ineffective.
