Help save my Hass

    3 responses

Hi, I brought my wife a hass avocado tree 3 years ago and last year we got our first crop (7 fruit). It was doing really well up until this summer when the leaves started to droop and the we had two 45 degrees days and around 70% of the leave were burnt. The tree faces west on a slop so drainage is not a problem. we have good soil and no clay. behind the tree is a six foot fence. I understand that avocados do not have dark to protect it and it obviously it been severally sun burnt. I have trimmed the tree by around 25% however I'm thinking to save the tree I will need to cut it back to the bottom foliage and erect a shade cloth veranda from the fence to protect it over the next couple of summers until there is enoughf foliage to protect itself. I also think there is a deficiency in the soil? Can you please help me save my hass?

Regards

Brad

Brad,
I spray mine with Yates anti rot religously every 6 weeks. Before that I was losing them to phytophthora. I was lucky enough to speak to a commercial grower who put me onto it.
It's perfectly safe, and no withholding period. from what I've been told, if you drink Coca-cola apparently you're drinking the ingredients of anti rot.

It looks ok on the larger grey branches. Anything over about 43c will cook 1st and more likely second year growth up to an inch or so in diameter which still has green bark. Its of course only the side facing the sun which gets burnt. Mine either drop the branches of over a few years the damage will slowly heal.

They unfortunately have a temperature and sun intensity limit even if you water them all day there comes a point where the UV light reaches a point they have never seen in nature. Apart from painting them or planting in part shade or moving to the more mild tropics, not much you can do about it.

I use cheap beach umbrellas to get plants through summer until they are established. They are good investments.
