Low Chill Walnut

Hi _ I have a Placentia Low Chill Walnut - it was growing ok - the graft has failed to come out of dormancy now winter is over. The rootstock is I understand a Black Walnut - it is growing profusely - should I let the rootstock grow in the hope I can buy/swap for a Placentia Walnut scion somewhere down the track? or cut my losses? Mid North Coast NSW

Hi I also have 2 of the Placentia Low Chill Walnuts. One came out of dormancy about 1 week ago and the other one is just sitting doing nothing. I am still hopeful. I am in south east queensland, and we have just had plenty of rain.

Thanks for the feedback - no sign of the graft coming out of dormancy the rootstock has put up long shoots 30cm long after we received rain. I have been watering the plant to keep it alive despite being in dormancy.
At least one of your Low Chill Walnuts has come out of dormancy - !! and you can always cut a new graft, provided the Black Walnut rootstock is growing and has an active cambrium later. I'd be happy to buy some grafting scions from you once your success story comes to life. The trees arent cheap are they. Fingers crossed. I am located down on the Mid North Coast of NSW, inland from South West Rocks. Steve

I haven't had any shoots off either rootstock yet. I also kept mine watered through dormancy, although not overly wet. I'm relieved I have shoots on one of the grafts, yes they definitely aren't cheap. I'm happy to provide you with some grafting scions. So hopefully the plant starts to thrive. We have had perfect weather up here so it has the best chances. Vanessa

Hi Vanessa - glad you have one of the Low Chill Walnuts growing as we hoped for :) I will let my rootstock remain healthy so I have viable rootstock (Black Walnut) to graft onto. Keep in touch - Steve

No worries Steve. I'm still not losing hope on the other tree as yet either.
