John Mc starts with ... You can grow medicinal marijuana with a licence. I don't know how difficult it is to obtain a licence but I'm sure you won't find one in the bottom of a packet of corn flakes. There's a guy I heard on the radio last week that is growing quite a large commercial crop in NSW, Sydney I think. Apparently the THC is ziltch nada nisht. The crop is experimental and it will be used mainly for making hemp which in turn is made into hemp clothing. In general it is illegal in Australia to grow Marijuana, but in South Australia every person IS allowed to grow 2 Plants "for Personal Use." ......... I live in Victoria,& I'm not sure what the law here is. I have heard that we can grow 1 plant each, but the more popular belief is that it is Totally Illegal here. .... Mark says... M Nash,,, The Japanes Weeping maple is beautiful, no doubt. But Marijuana grown as a Bonsai Tree has a completely different look to it. You call Marijuana a "Weed". That's all just a point of veiw really. A Rose growing in a feild of Wheat may be beautiful but it is just a "Weed" to the Wheat Farmer. ....... Strictly speaking, a Weed is ANY Plant that grows where it is not wanted. We,(my Wife & I) grow what people call "weeds" deliberately, & the overall cottage garden effect this gives is quite stunning! It IS Superior to cotton & all those 'Poly-whatevers.',, I have even heard that Hemp is tougher to use to make worker's overalls! Violet_Cactus says... There is an easy to grow fibre that's even better than hemp fibre. Tougher, silkier, more comfortable to wear, makes excellent cordage. Most people have probably pulled this tough plant out of their gardens and cursed it THE STINGING NETTLE (Urtica dioica) They make delicious soup, too. Seriously. Hi Peter, try these: 1)'Lady Ridley's Nettle Soup' Ingredients: 1 lb potatoes ½ lb young nettles 2 oz butter 1½ pts chicken or vegetable stock sea salt & black pepper 4 tablespoons sour cream Method: Cook the peeled, chopped potatoes for 10 mins in salted water. Drain. Wash & chop coarsely the nettles (Only pick the new, young tops,using gloves!) Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the nettles and stew gently for a few minutes. Add the potatoes and heated stock, bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes or until tender. When all is soft, cool slightly & purée in a blender, adding seasoning and the sour cream. 2) 'Stinging Nettle Soup' Ingredients: * 2 Tbsp. butter, divided * 1 onion, chopped * 1 tsp. salt, plus more to taste * 1 lb. potatoes, peeled and chopped * 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth * 1/2 lb. stinging nettles * 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper * 1/4 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg * 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional) * Sour cream, yogurt, or Horseradish Cream (optional) Preparation: 1. In a large pot, melt 1 Tbsp. butter over medium-high heat. Add onion and 1 tsp. salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft, about 3 minutes. 2. Add potatoes and broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to maintain a steady simmer and cook 15 minutes. 3. Add nettles and cook until very tender, about 10 minutes. Stir in remaining 1 Tbsp. butter, pepper, and nutmeg. 4. Puree soup with an immersion blender or in a blender or food processor in batches. For a silken, less fibrous texture, run mixture through a food mill or sieve. 5. Stir in cream, if using. Season to taste with additional salt and pepper, if you like. 6. Serve hot, garnished with sour cream, yogurt, or Horseradish Cream, if you like. Apologies for the measurements not being Aussie. The top recipe is an English one, the second recipe is American. Preparation: to prepare the infusion, mix 60g of finely crushed nettles with two and a half cups of water. The mixture is boiled, and then covered for 10 minutes. It can be consumed either hot or cold. Nettle tincture It eliminates dandruff and leaves the hair silky. Moreover, this strengthens and revitalizes the hair. Preparation: leave six-seven fresh leaves or two spoons of the dried plant to macerate in half a liter of alcohol for ten days. The mixture is then used to rub the hair root. Mark says... Violet, Nettle Tea used for health benefits "Really Does Work." I can say this for sure as I used to use it way back in the '60's & '70's. I forget what it was used for though.(obviously not for memory.) .. I think it was something to do with the blood & circulation, but don't quote me. Someone else said it can be used to help eliminate dandruff, & this also Does Work! I used a commercial preparation way back then,along with a Hops shampoo.(not bad if you don't mind smelling like beer.) Another Use for Nettle, is it can be applied to minor cuts & abrasions as a poultice when one does not have any bandages handy. Yes,this Works too. I have Done it. It has to be prepared first(I forget how,boiling I think). It is a strange use to apply to abrasions,when one considers just how the leaves do sting when they are touched! ...
