Can anyone tell me what type of passionfruit grows best in the Jervis Bay area of NSW and the aspect I should plant it. We get plenty of rainfall on the coast at times and other times it can be very hot. I have a Panama that is very straggly and the root stock is coming up everywhere. One fruit only although perhaps the birds have pinched some?

Hi Kaye,

Try the common black passionfruit. I live in Wollongong and it comes up as an occasional weed around here. Do not buy grafted passionfruits as you are finding out. The rootstock is very invasive and almost impossible to get rid of without resorting to poisons.

Yes you can buy ungrafted passionfruit. The ones I've seen are normally labelled Passionfruit Seedlings

Diggers Club sell passionfruit seeds.

I suppose you could also just scrape them out of the one you like in the supermarket.

Here is a picture of a passionfruit vine sneaking over the fence from our neighbours yard. Note the shape of the leaves and how the fruit is formed, much like a bush goosberry. I have no idea what sort it is except that it's a very old type, I can always pinch a couple if anybody would like a few seeds

Have you tasted the fruit Wayne? How does it measure up to the commercial types?

No I haven't Phil, this is the first time I've seen it and it's not ready yet. To me it seems to have a very thick skin so I think the commercial varieties will produce more pulp. Flavour wise? we will have to wait and see

No, there are a few species (endemic and introduced) in NSW and Qld, still haven't got my head around them yet. One grows here near Lamington Nat Park but the fruit remain green and not much flesh - certainly not appetising. Flowers greenish as well. Have had a good germination result from P. antioquiensis Jantina sent me.
