Persimmon Fuyu root invasiveness

Hi. I want to plant a Fuyu Persimmon in my garden bed in which there is a council’s sewer pipe I think around 90cm below its top soil. I did some research and noticed that Fuyu has tap root. Can you please advise if this is going to be an issue in long term. Thanks.

Hi bobDal,

Fuyu is a med size tree. You need to plant the tree away from the sewer pipe at least 1.5m to avoid blocking/damage sewerage pipe in the future. Below is my Fuyu around 20y old. Cheers.

Thanks David. So I need to plant it in clay area of my back yard and not in garden bed. My question is that if I make a 1mx1m mound with compost/top soil and a bit of clay for a max depth of around 30cm, is this going to be OK? Thanks

Hi bobDal,

My Fuyu planted direct on the clay soil but it was 2 years old. If you want to plant a young tree in ground then it is good idea to build a mound as suggested. Fuyu does not like too much water during the wet season if the ground is too wet, all the young fruits will be aborted/dropped. Also, you need to cover the young plant during the hot day. attached is my fuyu fruit look like. Cheers
