Amir starts with ... Hi all, Looking for some affordable Pinto peanuts to cover a large area on my land as a nitrogen fixing cover crop to start up a huge food forest and also as a ground cover for my existing organic banana plantation. Preferably in seed as it gets quite pricey buying in pots! I love that it's a perennial nitrogen fixing cover crop. Thanks in advance. | About the Author Amir Sydney 23rd July 2019 4:08pm #UserID: 20611 Posts: 1 View All Amir's Edible Fruit Trees |
Amanda says... can't help with the peanuts - but just wanted to mention lucerne as a great nitrogen fixing cover crop also, if you/anyone interested.... It's so easy to grow and has very deep roots (up to 1.5m main root on ours) and can be treated as a perennial. It also produces triacontanole - a plant growth promotor - which is pretty handy. I just go around with the whipper-snipper when it starts flowering, or any time it's getting too tall and leave it where it falls - it can then make mulch in-situ...and the worms love it too. It grows straight back from the crown. Or let it go to seed then mow/whippersnipper - for new plants. It might not be suitable for you - but just thought I would mention it because it's turned out to be my fave cover crop. | About the Author Amanda LESCHENAULT,6233,WA 24th July 2019 11:04am #UserID: 16828 Posts: 89 View All Amanda's Edible Fruit Trees |

jakfruit etiquette says... For pinto peanut seed in bulk, you will need to contact a farm supply shop in nth nsw or qld, ie the type of shop that sells bags of fertilizer, pasture and crop seed. You could also try to contact a banana growers organisation, or other fruit growers association. The NSW Dept Ag might have info about how to establish the plants, ie seed might need to be inoculated to grow and fix N. some info here. http://www.southedgeseeds.com.au/Bolton%20495%20Pinto.pdf | About the Author jakfruit etiquette vic 25th July 2019 8:48pm #UserID: 5133 Posts: 915 View All jakfruit etiquette's Edible Fruit Trees |
