amanda starts with ... Good authority states that we will now be charged (by Quarantine WA = Agriculture Dept WA) for seeds to be inspected @ around 50 or so bucks. Per 15 minutes. This is pretty serious business..it means that it could happen to any one of the States over there too..? And that if I want to send tomaote seeds to say Brendan - that's 56 bucks thanks. And vice versa. This will affect all of our Aust seed suppliers etc. Who are already doing it tough. If your fellow WA Gardeners decide to take action, petition etc...would u all consider supporting us against this crazy charge..? Please? It tough here as it is - but this will make it impossible in truth. (and I suspect it will open up the way for all of your Ag depts. to charge the same..) | About the Author amanda19 Leschenault (150km south of Perth) 25th June 2013 12:46am #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |

Jason says... Oh well they say everyone in WA is a millionare via mining so 50 bucks wont hurt :P damm better not happen in Victoria though because we are bankrupt over here as it is. I'll have to dig a smuggling hole in the sole of my shoe. I don't think it'll be a big deal anyway. Plenty guys still manage import all the new varieties of weed from Holland via the post without troubles, they just get more inventive on how to hide the seeds | About the Author Jason Portland 25th June 2013 3:55pm #UserID: 637 Posts: 1217 View All Jason's Edible Fruit Trees |

Jim says... here is some more info http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-06-25/buying-seeds-through-the-post-will-cost-more/4779770?section=wa | About the Author electra Fremantle 25th June 2013 6:57pm #UserID: 3242 Posts: 112 View All electra's Edible Fruit Trees |
Mike says... It would be good to know Mr Pickles formal qualifications in the pest and pathogen fields. This action is not commensurate with the risk. The sources of existing WA pests and diseases is not through seeds in the post. Many weedy pasture plants are being spread wilfully by this very group. It seems to be more about protectionism in a sense. How would WA handle it if the outside slapped similar restrictions on WA produce and seeds like wheat planned to be taken out of the state. | About the Author Cairns 25th June 2013 7:34pm #UserID: 5418 Posts: 1438 View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |

amanda says... It may seem like WA right now - but if it's a revenue raising/cost recovery exercise, and we let it happen, then it's possible that it will happen elsewhere. I agree Mike - so far I can only see that it's to protect against illicit seeds (banned plants) which is crazy because it will likely penalise the honest.. Jason is absolutely right - seeds come in from all over the world and very easily too. And Mike is right too - they are not the risk as such - when it comes to pathogens and pests. And isn't it crazy in light of the fact that we transgenic seeds being allowed in - and yet - there is no quarantine dept to deal with them as yet..? Hmnnn...lots to think about there. This sucks...WA is starting to become a genetic backwater.. :-( Anything needs to be bloody tough to survive here without human intervention...so why are they so worried..? | About the Author amanda19 Leschenault (150km south of Perth) 26th June 2013 11:52pm #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |
denise1 says... The major inconvenience with paying for inspections is that an extra 3 to 7 days can elapse until the seeds can be released to their destination. Not very good for tropical perishable seeds. Regular importers could have an account with the quarantine service to allow rapid processing. Still not fair for everyone else. | About the Author denise1 auckland NZ 27th June 2013 8:16am #UserID: 6832 Posts: 688 View All denise1's Edible Fruit Trees |
