Wayne says... Never in my life have I seen anything like what is happening in this part of the country. snottiegobble, many people will never get back on track and recover from this, this flood event will cost tens of billions of dollars and will impact on us for years to come. One does not know where to start, almost twice the volume of the Sydney harbour is flowing down the Fitzroy river through Rockhampton every day. More than the area of NSW is in flood, crop damage is estimated at toward $2 billion. We have 60 coal ships sitting at anchor here in Mackay waiting for coal. There has been a massive de-railment to block the line south of town and most mines have stopped due to the floods. This is costing more than $2million a day; The Bruce highway is closed indefinitely between Gladstone and Rockhampton virtually isolating Central and North Queensland. Here in Mackay the fresh food shelves, especially meat and bread, are empty in all supermarkets. And to top it off a storm has just gone over and dumped 80mm in 1/2 an hour. Bugger the rain ---- and the wet season is just starting | About the Author Wayne Mackay QLD 6th January 2011 6:34pm #UserID: 338 Posts: 908 View All Wayne's Edible Fruit Trees |

sserendipityy says... I live in Northern Rivers (NR) and can not imagine the ongoing clean up (months/years) up your way. I moved to NR from Sydney and had no idea how floods devastate communities - I am well aware of this now. We are expecting 200mls by Tuesday. The rain has just been relentless this season. I was looking forward to gardening while on hols but have had only one day without rain. Hope your loved ones are all safe . . . | About the Author sserendipityy south lismore 8th January 2011 7:23pm #UserID: 4761 Posts: 12 View All sserendipityy's Edible Fruit Trees |
BJ says... So much water! Had to re-stake a rollinia because the ground has turned to jelly and its leaning over. Pushed the 1.8m stake into the ground and it went 1.2m in without much force at all, and I live high up on a hill with little drainage problems (getting worried about land slides now though!). We've now got 'water walls' pushing down from Toowoomba, through Lockyer, Ipswich and West Brisbane catching people unaware. | About the Author Theposterformerlyknownas Brisbane 10th January 2011 8:30pm #UserID: 3270 Posts: 1552 View All Theposterformerlyknownas's Edible Fruit Trees |
amanda says... Always a popular topic - the weather!!? We are practically melting in the heat - but at least my home and my soil is not washing away. I wonder how this might affect the great barrier reef also... But - we have been warned of increased "extremes" in weather patterns (as Europe freezes also)..... I wonder if it's coming to bear perhaps. | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton Mid West WA 11th January 2011 12:03am #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |

Diana says... Hi BJ, Wivenhoe dam has a storage capacity of 2.6 million megalitres, and a million megalitres are flowing into it per day- do the math! It's slightly more inflow than in January 1974. Not too bad yet, but who knows what will happen tomorrow and during the king tide on Friday. I have a similar problem with a post that I put in to hang the hammock from. 50kg of concrete in the very deep hole, but it is tipping over because the ground around is like mousse. I don't feel like lying in the hammock in the rain, luckily. Diana | About the Author 11th January 2011 12:03pm #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |
kert says... You can shake your fist in impotent rage OR you can devise a riposte. what if on "catastrophic" days neighbours/rural fire service personnel took turns in noting down every vehicle that enters the bush. Not as hard as it sounds as arsonists have their preferred sites and it is not necessary to cover every track . | About the Author sydney 11th January 2011 12:06pm #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |
Brad says... unfortunately we seem to get 4 or more 35 degree plus and windy days every week. Lake Clifton is probably 125kms south of Perth so there's a lot of places to keep an eye on. media this morning said 2000 hectares burnt with the fire lit in 7 places. unfortunately the tossers that do this love the media coverage | About the Author Brad2 G hill,Perth 11th January 2011 12:18pm #UserID: 2323 Posts: 762 View All Brad2's Edible Fruit Trees |
Brad says... BJ (unfortunately) got this right: We've now got 'water walls' pushing down from Toowoomba, through Lockyer, Ipswich and West Brisbane catching people unaware. crazy damage and loss of life. @Diana - the absolute dams capacity isn't what will help here. The outlets will be fully on, but if that flow is slower than the peak flood flow, it will make a difference to the danger posed. It does look like some of brisbane will flood despite the dam | About the Author Brad2 G hill,Perth 11th January 2011 12:46pm #UserID: 2323 Posts: 762 View All Brad2's Edible Fruit Trees |
