Remove first year flowers?

    5 responses

Avo Head starts with ...
Hello all,
I am a newbie to avo growing and hope someone can help. Im sure I have read somewhere that you should remove the first years flowers to maximise crops in subsequent years - is this true? Cant find my original source!! I have a Wurtz tree that arrived at Xmas in a plastic bag and has since been moved to a medium pot with complete fertiliser in preparation to be planted in my nearly built semi greenhouse on coastal Victoria in a raised bed (approx 800mm of soil below). It is very happy for the moment, (mostly) out of our ferocious winds and is starting to bud up nicely. Logic tells me to remove the buds so the energy goes into growing strong roots (especially since it will be moved from pot into the ground in a couple of months) but you guys are the experts. Hope you can help. Kind thanks

where have you read that?
Best to leave flowers unless you know what your doing - avos wont hold fruit they cant hold - I know Anglesea and best you can do is wind protection and afternoon hot sun in summer - Avos do love shade as they live understory in rainforests - keep that in back of your mind - also they love gypsum - not too much - just a handful every 4 -6 months - get hold of a birdswood Avo Tag and do what they say :) also dry in winter and water like crazy in summer - ps - your better to plant now or wait till late October when ground warms up

I removed the flowers off mine in the first year which was this spring. I don't know or care if it would have set and held fruit, it was too small anyway but now it has easily tripled in size since spring. Its gone from knee high to over my head now.

Just to update - NOTE - be careful as to which variety you remove flowers from as some have their growth points coming from ends of flower florets.
I did this with a Hass a couple years ago and totally stuffed up its growth cycle and it has never recovered :(

Other CVs tend to grow leaves from different points - so be careful unless you know what your doing.
