Shallot swap (forum)

17 responses

Wayne starts with ...
Guys, I'm starting to get a stock of shallot bulbs. These are different to what I grew years ago in the way that they don't come to seed and behave more like an onion. Some bulbs get to battam egg size before the tops die off, they are splended eating but if you don't pick them early you miss out on the nice green stems.

Someone mentioned they had a 'brown' shallot, which I think is the one I'm looking for. The one I'm looking for is the one that goes to seed, the stems stay green and the bulbs do not get to be so big even though they cluster like normal shallots.

So if anyone is interested in a swap

I'd love to swap Brad,if they are the same as Wayne's, but you may not like mine. They are not large - sort of like a biggish garlic clove. Or I have a few giant garlic coming along.

Hey, what's that plant on the left? Is it edible?

Better still, can you smoke it --- just kidding

The edible (and probably smokable) plants in the front of that little bed are parsnips. If you mean the reddish one, its a rhoeo (aka moses in the cradle) that I was given so i don't know the variety. Non-edible (I wouldn't smoke it either)

Hi Wayne - your shallots look beautiful! I did have a brown shallot that went to seed and stem was green - they were seeds from Diggers club if that's any help. I didn't grow any this year :(

Hi Wayne - I just had a look at Diggers - they don't seem to have them this year. The name of them was French Picador - as best as I can remember it? Maybe try the Eden seeds guys. They were really good anyway! good luck.

Julie: re swapping. I'll let you know what they look (and taste) like when I dig them up. I don't have a lot (not enough room), but if there's a fair few, I'll get some to you. Even if I can't, these came straight from a little vegie market, and I can buy extra again after summer.

Thanks Brad. Even one or two would be enough to start off - I don't use many.I have grown more patient as I get older (well, with plants, anyway!) and don't mind waiting for plants to breed up.

I started with one gorgeous red babiana bulb three years ago - this year a whole big potful!

Hey Wayne - I reckon spring onions are a great value plant! Mine have been on the go for a year now - I am impressed. I really like chives too.
Can you pickle shallots like normal onions do u think?

amanda, I just read on the Jamie Oliver forum about a lady who was pickling shallots. She was using a Delia Smith recipe - pickled in sherry I think. But maybe some other stuff too.

Hi Wayne,
A mate of mine pickles shallots. I think he just uses white vinegar, water, sugar & salt. (Could be some heat as well, like pouring the hot liquid over the shallots while they're in the jar?).

I'll try to find out the recipe, as I don't know the quantities he uses.

He gave me a jar full a few years ago, geez they go good with a cold beer.

Good job there Brad, I made the mistake of trying to grow them over summer, they multiplied OK but have no size to the bulbs
