Just wondering if Shipova pears(hybrid of European Pear Pyrus communis and Common Whitebeam Sorbus aria) are in Aus? Would like to try some fruit, and maybe have a crack at growing if they are worthwhile (though have read grafted plants still take a decade plus to fruit).

Hi Mcmelb1

Try Paul Recher, he might have one in his renowed Fruit Spirit Botanical Gardens in Dorroughby, NSW near Lismore. Also try Toora Heritage Pear Orchard in South Gippsland Vic. They have over 50 pear varieties in their collection. It's worth a try. This pear cv has been in cultivation for more than 400 years in Europe but it is still rare partly because it is very slow to bear fruit and it is almost sterile. It is mostly propagated by asexual means. Good luck to your search.

Happy gardening :-)

I would love a Shipova but I highly doubt they are in the country. I've seen them as well as other interesting hybrids overseas. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread just in case!
