BretK starts with ... Hello, I had a fern that died what I thought was not reason then I a tree grew through it. Now that tree seems to have gum leave and fern leave on it. I noticed this as I need to remove the tree but wanted to check first to make sure this isn't something I should hold onto or it is actually a type of tree and not unusual. It is similar to another tree on property with all normal leave but I've seen black cockatoos on it eating so bit concerned it might be rare. Using google lens on both leaf type I get Acacia amd lemon Eucalyptus. In two year it has grown to about 10 ft high.

jakfruit etiquette says... I think its an Acacia, not 100 percent sure which. Might have been a seed in the pot mix. The fern leaf is the juvenile seedling Acacia leaf and the long leaves are the more mature Acacia leaves. Not unusual to see both on one plant. Should not be hard for someone that knows more tham me to ID from the pics. Try Botanic Gardens or Burnley College. I think there are also online plant ID sites for Australian plants. If it is a common local plant, you should be able to find the same foliage in the bush. At a guess it could be Acacia melanoxylon, blackwood. Foliage seems close. It is one of the larger Acacias, so would grow fast. | About the Author jakfruit etiquette gotham city,3000,Vic 30th January 2022 8:53pm #UserID: 5133 Posts: 915 View All jakfruit etiquette's Edible Fruit Trees |
