alexmisc123 starts with ... Wondering if there are any suggestions as to why my citrus trees are battling so hard? I planted them 12 months ago, they went backwards in winter significantly. I airated the soil a month ago and fertilised. I saw a lot of new healthy green shoots come but they have seemed to now have burnt off and shut down? The now sick green shoots are extremely brittle and weak to touch. There has been a heat wave and heavy winds since fertilisation. Should I fertilise and water heavily again or is there such thing as too much fertiliser? Please help. Pauline Staff of Daley's Nursery says... Hi Alex, there is definitely a thing as too much fertiliser, especially if a plant is stressed. Citrus will sometimes struggle with winter yellows as the rootstock is deciduous and this affects the topgrowth. If they were already struggling before that then it can be difficult for them. If they are actively growing now it is time to water them evenly and often if you can. Better several good waters than a deep one that alternates with drying out. Avoid waterlogging if you have poorly drained soil. Shade structures built to protect from westerly sun may be needed if they are stressed in the hot weather.
