suckers on figs

SueBee says... Fig suckers will strike easily if you pull them with a few roots. I would either pull or cut them and leave the original but your choice.My fig suckers fruit quite freely but the fruit is a bit smaller.Some fig trees like to be bushy with lots of suckers rather than a tall one trunk tree too. Molly starts with ... The suckers on my fig look healthier than the original tree. Would it be OK to leave the 2 strongest suckers and cut out the rest of them including the original plant?
