suckers on figs

The suckers on my fig look healthier than the original tree. Would it be OK to leave the 2 strongest suckers and cut out the rest of them including the original plant? The original plant is still small, and is struggling.

Fig suckers will strike easily if you pull them with a few roots. I would either pull or cut them and leave the original but your choice. My fig suckers fruit quite freely but the fruit is a bit smaller. Some fig trees like to be bushy with lots of suckers rather than a tall one trunk tree too.

Thank you SueBee. that is interesting that the fruit on the suckers is smaller. I think I will give the tree and suckers a bit more tender care!
