Tamarillos - great growers in Melbourne

I love tamarillos! Anyone not growing these prolific sweet fruits (yes, when ripe they are very sweet) consider them.

Great yield, easy to grow, and look great in the garden giving a real tropical feel

This year I've had hundreds of the red bullets from each tree. I've got a yellow one as well, but its still a baby.

Just enjoyed a few from under the grill covered in melted brown sugar.

Not much frost at least, I used to grow them here in a couple of different colours (orange and a red) but didn't really like them so once they died of old age about 5 years ago I didn't grow them again, I used to think they combined the worst of a tomato with the worst of a passionfruit :p. But I never tried cooking them

I always thought they wouldn't take frost - but Mum told me about the tree growing in their backyard in Christchurch and that the winter there gave it a hiding and it was ok..? (maybe she meant that it grows back or something..not sure)
I love them - but not without sugar Jason :) They are very nice poached too (with sugar!)

Tamarillos ( red ones) make wonderful jam All you need is 1/3 of each, tamarillos, apples, & sugar.
They take light frosts quite well with only the leaves affected so you end up with an almost leafless tree with fruit hanging off it. Heavy frosts result in loss of fruit as well because the stalks die. Come spring a pruning of frost damaged branches will make the tree bushier & produce more flowers for the next season.
