Henry starts with ... I have an established valencia orange tree in my backyard. The oranges (heaps and good sizes too) are very very sour despite my using an all purpose citrus & fruit fertiiser as well as cow manure every four months. Please advise if this is characteristic of Valencia Oranges or the tree is lacking in something else. | About the Author Henry Blacktown 13th July 2009 10:36am #UserID: 605 Posts: 47 View All Henry's Edible Fruit Trees |

John I. says... Hi Henry, According to Collin Campbell from Gardening Australia, sprinkle about " six handfuls of sulphate of potash around the tree and then water in with two teaspoons of Epsom salts mixed into10 litres of water" to sweeten them up. Julie says... Henry, I don't which state Blacktown is in, so I don't know your climate. But here in Perth Valencias aren't ready to eat till about November. They colour up well before then, and are attractive to parrots, but aren't nice to eat. And they don't fall off the tree when ripe like Navels. Are you saying you usually pick yours in June? | About the Author Roleystone WA 13th July 2009 5:48pm #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |

Henry says... Hi all, thanks. To John, thanks again and much appreciated. Will do as advised after winter, before and during next fruiting. To Julie, Blacktown is one of the outer western suburbs of Sydney NSW. My mandarin season has just gone past while my oranges ripen on the trees during winter. In fact, my Valencias are beginning to turn slightly green now (after being orange over the past month). | About the Author Henry Blacktown 17th July 2009 7:55am #UserID: 605 Posts: 47 View All Henry's Edible Fruit Trees |
