What fruit tree does this come from?

Hi everyone, my name is Kim and I came across what I believe is fruit at Gardens for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ.

I picked the fruit (see attached) because my family used to have this tree when I was a kid but it was taken down years ago; the smell brought back lots of good memories. Does anyone know what kind of fruit it is - tree it comes from?

It is yellow, fuzzy on the outside, 1.5 inches all around and smells citrusy. I took it two nurseries by me and no one could identify it accurately as far as I can tell. One person said persimmon family and another an ornamental orange or lemon tree, but when I looked up pictures, it does not resemble any of those as far as I can tell - also given it is not fuzzy on the outside like a peach sort of.

Any tips you may have are appreciated!

Hi KimYac, it would help us help you if you can cut it open and take a photograph of what it looks like inside. Also, photograph of the tree and leaves would help. If it is edible tell us what it taste like. It is very difficult to identify from the photo you sent but someone may know it on sight.

I think it's a Poncirus trifoliata, or possibly a Citrange (Poncirus X orange).
Both of these trees will have leaves in 3 leaflets. If you cut the fruit as per juicing an orange, thats what it will look like, probably with several Citrus type seeds.
If you google image search Poncirus, should be able to Id.

Cumquat? If 2 nurseries couldn't id it maybe not something that common ?
Both Poncirus and Citrange have Citrus scent, but more like orange flavoured medicine. Poncirus fruit a bit fuzzy, Citrange not fuzzy. Both can be 1.5 inches, which is big for a cumquat.
There are other hardy Citrus around, such as Poncirus X cumquat, or other Fortunella hybrids. Poncirus most likely to be growing in NJ? Either the fruit is very fuzzy or the photo is very fuzzy ???

I agree with jackfruit, Trifoliate Orange, Poncirus trifoliata would also be my bet. The trifoliata fruit has fine hair, like that of peach and back in the old days in the USA, they grow this as a hedge - so I read when I was trying to work out some rootstock history. If you are close to a college/university, you can take it to their botany department and have them look at it and indentify for you.
