What plant is this?

Hi there,

I am just wondering if anyone knows what this plant is? When it first started growing, I thought it was eggplant but when it started to fruit, it's spiky and doesn't look like eggplant at all. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Kim

It looks a little like Solanum macranthus, eventually grows into a largish shrub/small tree. I think you can use it as an eggplant rootstock, but be sure of your ID as many of the Solanaceae are fairly toxic.

Looks like datura to me (Solanum stramonium. Highly toxic and a local weed in Sydney.

You can read more about its drug inducing effects here: http://www.the-salvia-dream.com/daturaplant.html

Hi CCS - no idea on pic 2 (can u get a close up of leaf and flower?) pic 1 reminds me of a CROWN Beard? but the leaf shape I am not familiar with.

Try this google maybe:

Crown Beard flower images

(if it is - it's a weed and poisonous to stock)

Sorry - just edited Cape beard to Crown beard (must be time for sleep..)

Big one is an Inga. That close to the house will mean lots of possums on the roof. you'll still get a wheelie bin full of pods from it even with constant possum raids.

The sunflower is Mexican sunflower, Tithonia rotundifolia. I have a lovely red/orange cultivar "Torch" if anyone wants seed. Great butterfly attractant.

Thanks on the ID's folks, I know I should know these things having read about them all enough, god I wish I had a mentor and a decent property for them to train me on. These two plants and a brazilian cherry are at Earthwise community garden in Subi. The Brazilian Cherry didnt taste as good as City Farms but that could have been sun light/ location/ time of year.

Wow !!! what beauty Phil if you can send seed to WA ? Or if you want to try I would love some.

1:40am.......Go to sleep earlier or you will get sick Amanda, Body needs to repair, 6-7 hours else you break.

getting back to my tree needing id - the fruit did redden up. They're still only thumbtip size and a little pointy at the end. the tree is at the bottom of the block and I suspect gotten no fertilizers or extra water. with that in mind the fruit are not growing in clusters and may be smaller than typical. I'm still not sure what it is, despite having cut a couple open. seeds weren't developed properly.

yes charles its at the new place
