White Adriatic Fig

    11 responses

Yesterday I purchased a number of dwarf fruit trees. I noticed that the White Adriatic Fig will grow to 5M instead of the regular 2.5 - 3M dwarf size. The nurseryman advised to grow it in a pot or keep it pruned. This is okay but can I expect fruiting in the second year like regular dwarf fruit varieties.Any advise would be appreciated.

Figs grow and fruit beautifully in pots. To bonsai your tree it will need regular pruning as well as root pruning, it is usually done with potted specimens but can also be done with trees in the ground by cutting through the surface roots with a sharp spade, this is good for trees like figs and will reduce the height and spread of the tree. If it is a cutting grown plant it will fruit straight away. There is a great blog about growing fruit trees in pots, have a look at this.

I have said that the fruit of the White Adriatic in my garden was bland and disappointing but since then I've tasted a couple of sweeter, fuller flavoured fruit. These are the ones that I did not eat immediately off the tree; they sat on the kitchen bench for a few days, softened a little and that seemed to have improved their flavour.

Hi MaryT, glad to hear yours have improved. I find that they have a stronger fig flavour than the BT and BG, and they're now my husbands favourite. I just like them all :)

VF I'm still waiting for the Picone and Brown Turkey to ripen. They're slow because they don't get enough sun, I think. I love the Black Genoa, it is big fat juicy & figgy, but I did enjoy the White Adriatic. They have a fruitiness that is less luscious but more refined.

I had a fruit from a white Genoa a while ago. Very good but then again it seems all figs are very good. I'm finding it harder to rate any fruit higher the older I get.

A white Genoa, Jason. Don't have one of those; may have to make room :) I'm with you, there's nothing better than a sun warmed fig straight off the tree.

My first white adriatic, a good size but I was dismayed by the splitting around the "eye", is this usual for this type, or related to uneven watering? The ants were enjoying it before I could, and it did not seem evenly ripe but even the firmer area near the stem end was quite nice. Not sure how long to leave it before picking, it wasn't "droopy" as Mary T has suggested but the splitting eye was getting to me! Still a few fruit to ripen on the little tree.

Same here, I don't think the rain is helping.

They like dry weather as they ripen otherwise they swell up and can split. Sugar levels will be low and fig rust awaits given your recent rains.

Are fruit fly a problem? I've haven't encountered problems yet so I am hoping the bird netting will do.
