Hi - Has anyone had any great tasting white Sapotes yet?
Ive had some from my 2 y/o Pike that didnt have any seed (possibly unpollinated ) that tasted pretty good like pear custard - but i had some from a tree i know that tasted simliar but had one that tasted like lemon merangue pie - really pleased ive got six different on the go at present and my Hawaiian Supreme and Sue Belle have started to flower already - hows everyone else going with flowers?

10 years - you need to look around for a couple of grafted ones - my one year old plants already flowering - try and get a Vista and Pike or Vista and Reineke or golden globe?? Or a suebelle instead of Vista (fruits and flowers all year) do some more web research and borrow glowinskis book from your library on growing fruit in australia - when you try a sapote like I have finally this year youll understand - cheers

Seedlings take 7-12 years to fruit in Victoria. But like all life they flower for a few years before coming fully mature and fertile. Although I have one 15 years of age which hasn't flowered yet.

The spring flowering is the main crop, some flower in Autumn but the fruit quality isn't nearly as good on those crops.

The named varieties aren't anything special, seedlings taste the same. Much more important to match the variety to your climate.

Hey - Jason
Your probably quite correct - Ive tasted what could be a seedling and compared well with my pike that was seedless size of a squash ball - havnt tasted my Hawaiian Supreme yet similar size and flowering on ends of new growth at present - one or the mate of the tree I know tasted like lemon meringue - I have a seedling too thats not showing any flowers yet - my Lamb Hass are getting quite big and did some pruning on my 2.5mt Hass in pot today and tied longer branches down like im doing with Lamb Hass - I reckon the LH may grow 25 -30% bigger b4 I harvest - Hey just saw an Avocado sensor linked to a smartphone App to test ripeness of an Avo - may be only good at supa market tho - saw a good video on the California Avo collection on Youtube today - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z5ONrV67MY

Terrence - Dont know where you may find one in your area - I wont be grafting my seedling for a year or 2 anyway until i get excess material off it and have only just planted seed for seedlings - there should be a collector around NSW for sure

Markmelb, Pike never gives a fruit smaller than a cricket ball if pollinated well and usually bigger than that. How far away are your pollinators?.

I also got the tiny seedless fruit on mine for a couple of years until my pollinators came online. Fruit size ultimately depends on how many seeds fertilised inside the fruit. I think there's potential for 5 seeds but a big fruit will usually have 3. If you get all 5 pollinated It'll be grapefruit sized. Pollination probably gives you a better flavour too.

All mine are flowering well atm, including a seedling for the first time. This is by far the heaviest set from all the recent rain and damp soil. My White Sapotes are planted on a slope with large Eucalypts nearby, giving me a hard time keeping the water up to them. If this is the "off" flowering period, I'm in for a heavy crop in spring.

i have had the same rotten luck too - thats why I got some other varieties - my HS has a huge bottleneck base - does everyone else have same issue or is it just a grafting issue?

My Kampong also has a huge bottleneck rootstock as well. I discounted it as a graft issue and keep cutting off the shoots.

No, Kampong was one of the last to acquire. It's flowering, but too small to leave fruit on when they appear. All other varieties are in flower as well.

Seedling in flower for the first time.

JohnMc1, in Mexico they flower with the beginning of the rainy season (September? ish) just before it gets cold. They actually go completely leafless there during the dry season. Then flower.. and new growth.

Here in Southern Vic is a little different because they don't go completely dormant and flower either in Spring or Autumn depending on the variety and how the seasons were for rain etc, although most of mine flower only in Spring.

How about Homestead? I saw a White Sapote variety "Homestead" recently down at BAAG, but can't seem to find much information about it.

Some reports said it was similar to Suebelle but it didn't have the woolly leaves. I would like to know if it is worth getting. Thanks.

There's a few varieties which have multiple names, I've got a feeling Homestead is one of those?. In my experience anything with wooly leaves has been a dud in my climate. Although one of my seedlings is a wooly leaf and seems to be making good fruit set right now.. Doesn't mean it's going to taste any good here, but probably be a very good tree further North.

Here's a Golden Globe budding up, typical of all of the 8 cultivars. The Hawaiian Supreme flowers are more advanced.

Mark, Hawaiian supreme looks somewhat self fertile. The ones that need pollination usually have a much fatter fruitlet. Check your Pike for reference when it flowers next you'll easily see the difference.
