Yacon My Picture

Jan starts with ...
I purchased this from Daleys in Oct 2007 and brought it to Tewantin in Qld
where it was planted and it has looked after its self since them i.e. not
watering or fertilizer.
Tasted it today for the first time and very impressed.
Would recommend to anybody to plant and grow a Yacon as it is very easy

I hear that you use the long tubers for eating and plant the knobbly ones out to propagate the plant. I tried to grow it here in Victoria but it only lasted the first season.

Maybe worth trying again? Our friend in Glenlyon seems to have no problems with it (other than rats that it). This plant seems to have some health benefits too. CERES should have some for sale in a few weeks time (thanks for the tip re CERES Phil). Lynne

maybe in vic you would need to save the knobbly bits inside till spring and plant out then I have planted out in Qld but have not emerged as yet. It also didn't die back here

ok might give it another go. Hey Lynne those damsons you gave me were superb - I stewed them with a little castor sugar, added a couple of cloves and wow... The tree itself is looking good, buds already swelling so looks like it transplanted ok. Thanks again so much.

glad to hear that plums were ok and tree seems alright so far Phil. Don't forget to send me an email if coming to Melb with trailer in next few weeks as there's another one. The ice cream bean has very interesting leaf structure. I'm getting bubble wrap for it and am still debating whether to put the plant in a pot or the ground. I've read some good things about cape gooseberries too -thanks.

Does anyone know where I can get this in Melb? Diggers seeds have sold out & a few nurseries that sell rare plants haven't heard of it. Or does someone in Melb have a spare plant they can sell?

Hi Lynne, I grow yacon at Mt. Gambier with no problems.I think I read somewhere that anywhere you can grow dahlis you can grow yacon. Possibly they require good drainage which I have.We get some frost and the tops die off and shoot again in the spring.I was told that you eat the big tubers and replant the little knobbly ones.This works for me.Happy gardening Jantina.

are you in DownUnder ? If you are in DownUnder then you can get some from DaleysFruit . But if you are in CA then google it, I knows my friends in FL who got theirs on the web in the state.
