Yuzu leaves & branches disappeared

    2 responses

Judy Hux starts with ...
Our precious yuzu tree has been happily growing for the last 2 years in our fully netted vegetable enclosure - but suddenly (in less than 48 hours) almost all of its leaves & many of its branches have disappeared. Any ideas of what could have caused significant damage to our yuzu tree in such a short time - and what we could do to help save it please? (we've temporarily moved it next to our house so we & our cats can keep a closer eye on it and fed it with citrus food & liquid seaweed)

Hi Judy, you say suddenly (in less than 48 hours) almost all of its leaves & many of its branches have disappeared.
I am wondering if your leaves fell off and you saw them on the ground. Branches disappearing is unusual.
Is something eating them ?? Possum ??
My Yuzu drops leaves at times, usually they go yellow first. The plant is semi deciduous in winter. Have you had a cold snap recently ??
I don't think you need the straw mulch that close to the trunk. I would check that the pot soil hasn't dried out. Maybe move the pot to have morning sun but some afternoon shade to prevent sunburn on the exposed branches.

If the leaves are disappearing and you aren't seeing any, then something is eating them. Prime suspects are possums and rats, I've had finger limes stripped in a similar manner.

Keep it out of rodents reach, when it buds, spray with a strong decoction of cheap and nastily hot chilli, on a warm dry day, they come for a nibble and won't like the burn.
