About My Edible Backyard

Why Treetopsdreaming Love's Edible Plants

Hello, we're Ben, Elaine and Madison. Our family has recently launched a website about our journey towards a more self sufficient, sustainable and creative lifestyle. We believe that learning the skills to plant and care for edibles will be critical to our success.

In fact, we recently completed an inventory of the plant varieties located in our Zone 1 (permaculture) garden area. We have approximately 160 plants each performing different functions (such as chop and drop, ground cover, etc.). Of these, 111 plant varieties are edible.

treetopsdreaming is the name of our property. In total, the property is about 2.1 hectares (or ~7.5 acrea) and is located in south east Queensland, Australia. Most of the land is steeply sloped and is very challenging to manage (at least in a conventional sense). We have owned the land since 2003.

In terms of climate, our property is located in cold zone 9b-10 and heat zone 5-7. (In other words, we are in a subtropical climate). The following list details the plant varieties that we have planted in our garden so far. Please click on the link to view the list (and to get ideas about what plant to plant in your garden if you live in a similar climate): garden plant list: zone 1 (permaculture) garden area. We hope to complete similar lists for our zone 2 and zone 3 (permaculture) garden areas in the near future. (These zones have less edibles, but contain a similar number and diversity of plants.)

This edible plant has very versatile fruit and has performed really well (in the subtropics). Our tamarillo is planted in part shade (low sun) and has been prolific in these conditions. So far, QLD fruit fly has not been a major issue...

This tree has been a good performer in our subtropical garden. Although it is not as spectacular as the non-dwarf varieties (in terms of flower blossom display), it is much more practical to manage (as it can be easily netted). We will be replacing our non-dwarf varieties with this variety in the next few years. The fruit is susceptible to QLD fruit fly...
