Avocado tree - type A or type B?

    8 responses

Hello!
We moved to our new home in Victoria 2 years ago.
There is a big avocado tree but it bears only a couple of fruits every year. I know that I can increase the fruit set by inter planting type A and type B varieties. However, I have no idea what type my avocado tree is.
If anyone can recognise its type, please help.
Thanks!!!

Hi - Unfortunately its a seedling A from a Hass seed by the looks and not a very good one - Ive seen alot better seedlings that bear very well alone only recently but because its so big is very difficult to rework with grafting something known - try planting a grafted Bacon and Hass next to it as the drainage must be ok where you are.

Hi Mark, thank you so much for your reply. It is encouraging to notice that you seem to grow quite a few avocado trees near where I live as I thought Victoria is too cold for growing avocado. I will try to get a grafted Bacon as per your suggestion. :)

CP - was the Avo you picked still hard as a rock (current season fruit) and not ripened? Wait till later in year as they should get alot bigger if theyre the current crop and review after that if your seedling is any good (about Aug - Nov?)My Lamb Hass have been on tree for over 12 months but is a late variety - Definitely plant a Bacon if you can find one within a few metres to help cross pollination - are there many Avos on seedling? please keep forum posted on findings.

Hi Carrot Papa, if you want to find out if your avo tree is type A or B, try this: http://www.answers.com/Q/Determine_the_sex_of_an_avocado_tree

Now I know it sounds like 'voodoo' etc, but try it, and get back with the answer.

Hi Carrot Papa, your Avo cant fruit if it doesnt flower heavily, and cross pollination wont increase fruit set if flowers arent sufficient. I would keep an eye on it at flowering time, how many flowers?, that may point to a causeof low fruiting. Also can you see any evidence of grafting, even a failed graft at the base ? It sounds like a seedling or rootstock which often take time to flower+fruit.
