Markmelb says... Hi - Not enough info TOG - are you in Victoria? You have to show with a photo how you put in ground - whats your soil type etc etc? Raising in a mound of well drained soil emulates its needs - go look on You tube for info - such alot there now you cant go wrong - even I am still learning after 20+ years of Avo growing :) maybe its 30+ years - especially when they get mild or more terminal root rot - LOL (even the original 1926 Hass died of Phytophera in 2002) | About the Author Markmelb MOUNT WAVERLEY,3149,VIC 1st March 2016 7:10pm #UserID: 7785 Posts: 1192 View All Markmelb's Edible Fruit Trees |

407 says... They need a lot of water in hot, dry summer areas. I get snow here and I have lost Avocados to heat but never cold. I personally think about now is a good time to plant them out - enough time to settle in before winter and hopefully well rooted by summer next year. Spring planting doesn't give enough time before heat hits. You should give a little protection from cold winds for a year or two, or ideally choose a sheltered spot. Sunburn can also be a problem on young trees, so consider whitewashing or painting exposed branches till it gets a good canopy. | About the Author 407 Kinglake West 1st March 2016 9:17pm #UserID: 13415 Posts: 1 View All 407's Edible Fruit Trees |
Theorangegrove says... Hi Thanks for all your advice..I am in Malta /Europe..the problem I have is transferring from a small pot with a baby (1 year old tree from seed) to ground...I have donated a few trees to friends for them to plant and all have complained that they just died straight away...they seem to be very sensitive or something..I have a 12 year old trees in a large pot and will soon have to tranfer it into the ground and really don't wish to loose it since it is the first tree I had grown from seed..Any other tips would be great,,thanks.. | About the Author Theorangegrove St.Andrew 2nd March 2016 7:55am #UserID: 13412 Posts: 2 View All Theorangegrove's Edible Fruit Trees |
Markmelb says... TOG - I dont think the ground in malta would be the best to plant in - would be very deprived rocky? clay? - better to stick to pots and try and get a grafted plant - I have a few in big pots up to 230lt growing well in good well draining commercial growing mix - seedlings could take up to 20years to bear if your lucky. Gets pretty hot there and they grow well against a protecting south wall (in Malta) getting morning sun and then shade protected from afternoon sun blast as they live under other trees in native forests. good growing :) | About the Author Markmelb MOUNT WAVERLEY,3149,VIC 2nd March 2016 10:56am #UserID: 7785 Posts: 1192 View All Markmelb's Edible Fruit Trees |
