White Sapote for Bendigo climate will grow no worries.
there are many cultivars in Australia but usually only a few offered by nurseries.
Maybe they're the favorites of the nursery owners after appraisal of all the cultivars, so they'd be a good bet.
sounds like you'd want a compact grower that doesn't need pollinator.

'Lemon Gold', Mac's Golden', 'Pike',
'Reineke Commercial' are all popular varieties.

As for Sapodilla and Green Sapote, they will be a big challenge.
If you can get them to grow you'd be doing well.

You'll need a very warm, protected microclimate.

The few selections of Green Sapote that I've seen were marcotted and in very limited numbers.
It may be different these days.
Many grafted cvs. of Sapodilla, they're all sweet and taste good to me.

HI Honlou, I'm impressed, you must get some very cold nights in Bendigo, can you tell us what in particular you have done to make them so happy? Thanks.

Im growing a green sapote here, its a side wedge graft from a man who used to live in redlands called kasper shneider,he named the variety called shneider, trees about 5 m tall and 10 yrs old ,flowers every year, very shy at bearing ,you must attend to nutrient level in particular zinc ,boron, calcium to make sure levels high enough, good luck finding other cultivars beleive me they are few and far between.

Hi Jantina, just by planting the two varities in the one hole they are supporting and protecting each other also in the most protected nth facing position I had. Move mulch away from plants in winter as it works in reverse in winter, actually keeps roots cooler whereas removing the mulch lets the winter sun warm the ground and releases it at night keeping roots warm also a layer of mushroom compost or cow manure(COMPOST IS HEAT) helps keep the ground warm too as it breaks down and feeds the roots.Ive also heard of putting stones as a mulch as they also hold the heat of the day in them keeping roots warm so they dont freeze.

Thanks David will note your feeding programme. Do you love the taste of this variety (shneider)do you reccommend this one highly ,or is it worth looking for a more fruitful one?
how big is it eventually going to get?
Daleys have a (grey) variety but dont know anything about it

The Green Sapote selections I had was also from Kasper, so most likely same one as David's.
He used to do marcots and grafts.
mine was a marcot and I don't think he'd actually given it a name back then.
He just said it was from his favorite tree.

White Sapote 'Chris' might not do so well in cooler climate ,
it always seemed to have deficiencies of some trace elements or something and was a slow grower for me.
Although, it might do better in Bendigo soils than NNSW where I grew it.
You'll only know if you try it I guess.

Microclimate improvement.
Hay or straw bales staked up to make walls on three sides of the tree can help retain heat ,
and its very easy to put a cover over at night if needed.
Drums of water close by can store a lot of heat as well.

Where in the landscape are you?
on a hill , half way up, on creekflats, in town , rural?
Just to get an idea of your climate relative to the rest of Bendigo.
It can make a big diference at the lower temps.
I lived there for a year in 1984...?

thanks for the great tip Speedy about the hay bales..
We are in Strathfieldsaye about 5 min from the town centre in a low lying area near a creek it is a new development about 7 yrs old not much established tree canopy around so 5 yrs ago i started putting in the bones of my garden first (trees)the great microclimate makers. We range here between -4 ( a few years ago we had a killer -7) and 45'.. but last summer it got to 47' being the Black Saturday fires) in town there are plenty of hills and concrete so its totally different . But in saying that I can grow Lotus and Angels Trumpets which hate the frost, in large tubs using either reflective heat from brick walls and pavers or under eves or pergolas. gotta love mother nature theres alway a way!!!

The original Schnyder tree is no more and Daleys also have no stock tree, so if anyone still has this growing I would recommend circulating it. I will buy a tree. It was also the only green sapote unaffected by fruit fly.

David any chance you'll be selling fruit? I've been trying to get some green sapote for my girlfriend to try for some time now. Never come across them anywhere in Brizzy.
