Biolytix Gardening Issues

    8 responses

Bonnie starts with ...
Our Biolytix system was installed when we built our house in 2009. In 2012 it went seriously wrong, we don't know if the worms died and we hadn't noticed or something else but the poo filled almost to overflowing. We needed to completely clean it out, flush through all 95 bags, replace the 3 filters. It was messy backbreaking work but we got stuck in with Steve at Go Green plumbing. There is another guy Ian in Denmark - don't call him for a service. He left the water valve running in ours and 1 other unit that I know of. Anyways the issues we have now are with high ph and low worm activity. I'll be adding more worms but how do I lower the ph? Will adding some brown vinegar everyweek do it? The plants being watered in the drainage zone are fine.

Don't tempt fate now Xiem.. :-( Bonnie if the plants are ok then things sound good...what is the pH of the water?

Are you putting food into your Biolytix? (via an Insinkerator)
If so - I would stop asap...wait until your worms have recovered fully and are ready - even then I only put small amounts in (and only fruit or veg scraps)

Your pH may stabilise as the worm population recovers. I am not certain tho...we had ours serviced on time and it worked great (after the first rebuild however...)
I think ours failed (and turned into a septic system too) because of the heat - we didn't have the top shaded..(and too much food went in incl. meat scraps..)

We used all ECO store products in the home (and vinegar as washing and dishwash rinse aids too..) I guess the wash products are all alkaline tho...

Regardless - I was told by the Biolytix Guru dude (Hermann..) that the worms adapt to pretty extremely well to changes in the environment...

A copy of our Service Results went to our Shire/Council also...they have been pretty relaxed about seeing the yearly service results but this may not last forever...

The ph when tested was 8.5 (very alkaline) I have added 2 kgs of worms and in a few weeks we will test again. Hopefully the ph will be lower. We don't have an insinkerator but our unit like yours gets quite hot. I think I'll come up with an insulated blanket or something I can easily remove every couple of months to check the worms. Amanda do you divert your grey water or does it go into the Biolytix? We may be using too much water and have been advised to divert some of the grey water to help our system. We have 4 people in the house. I'll find out the amount of water we use and get back to you. Good to know the worms are very resilient. Have you had any issues since your rebuild?

Hi Bonnie, no issues since rebuild (2yrs ago). We have moved recently from there - so no longer have one, sadly.

Absolutely all of our waste water went into the Biolytix. Only 3 of us though and husband worked FIFO...we were also very careful with our water use.

We put a mesh stand over our unit (salvaged storm water drain cover) and threw indoor/outdoor carpet over the top...not pretty - but it created a breezeway underneath - and solid shade.

Remember the worms can't escape the heat in the tank - and it gets very hot n humid in there...the surrounding earth probably insulates it also..

We had problems also with ph and the worms, replace aerator ours was a 2010 model, when biolytix went into receivership. So we have had no back up on how to correct ours at all. I've just purchased some worms from Eco valley and their looking very active at present and the smell as significantly dropped. I think our problem of ph levels going wrong is when the power has tripped for some reason raising the water level and our worms drowning. But any tips would be great...as I can only get cannas so far to grow there.
