Blueberry plants looking sick and yellow

    8 responses

I have 5 plants which are 7 months old roughly, all in the same pots here on the Gold Coast. They get morning sun, and I admit I don't water every day.
2 are Legacy, 3 are Misty. The legacy plants look stunted, and one has very yellow leaves and a short woody stalk.
They are in azalea potting mix with azalea food and tea tree mulch.
Also the 2 smaller plants look like they are getting some nibbling as well from some insects.

Should i move under shade? Check pH? I probably need to water more often also.....some pesticide also?

Cheers for advice.

p.s photos pending, current technical issues

Hi James,

This time of year blueberries are never going to look good around burleigh waters.

They do like coffee grounds to make the soil more acidic and yes they don't like the water drying out totally.

If you can add your photos that would be great. But from what I have seen they look fantastic :) And thanks for letting me know about the technical issue.

I don't know where Burleigh Waters is, but here in Perth blueberries are deciduous and will start to lose their leaves soon. So they don't look their best right now.

Correy, do you just dump the coffee grounds around the plant?

Hi Mj,

Yes around blueberries and other acid loving plants obviusly not going overboard. However Julie is right this time of year they are going to start looking worse and worse until the days start getting longer.

I think Burleigh waters is near the Gold Coast.

Mine are still looking happy, but they're in a nice warm sheltered spot, so they may not have noticed that it is winter yet!

Tea leaves are also good. I dry my tea bags, shake them out and save them in a container, then sprinkle on the soil. I added tea leaves when I mixed the original soil in the pot.

Thanks for replies, photos finally sorted. It's really just the one that is looking small and woody...see what you think.
I drink lots of coffee so I will drink a little more to keep the pH down.

With any luck, they will turn a brilliant red, like mine did. They looked beautiful till the leaves fell off.
