LydiaB starts with ... Hi everyone. I have a carambola which up until now has looked very healthy - despite not bearing any fruit even though it is now 4 years old! The latest batch of new growth is turning yellow (see photo). Could this be a nutrient deficiency? I give it generic fruit tree fertiliser every 6 months. My research has only thrown up iron deficiency as a possibility. Any advice gratefully accepted.

Julie says... I would have said magnesium or manganese, but according to the only images I could find, it's iron. You have probably already seen this. http://www.itfnet.org/gfruit/Templates%20English/carambola.agro.fert.htm | About the Author Julie Roleystone WA 29th August 2015 2:39pm #UserID: 154 Posts: 1842 View All Julie's Edible Fruit Trees |

Harry says... Is the yellowing occurring on the new or old growth of the tree? If it’s on the new growth, there’s a good chance you’ve got iron deficiency. To treat this, water in Chelates around the plant’s roots – once in spring and again in autumn. Magnesium deficiency, however, tends to develop on older leaves. This can be treated with Epsom salts at one teaspoon per litre of water (spray foliage once a month during summer). | About the Author Harry ROXBURGH PARK,3064,VIC 29th August 2015 9:09pm #UserID: 4975 Posts: 46 View All Harry's Edible Fruit Trees |

Markmelb says... Lydia - Harrys info above was quite correct but i have found that correction most of the time will show partially in old growth but definitely in new growth in Citrus - so post us your results later if this occurs for you - no idea whats happening with your Fejoas except if its been too hot with not enough water where you are in Northern Territory? | About the Author Markmelb MOUNT WAVERLEY,3149,VIC 14th September 2015 8:24pm #UserID: 7785 Posts: 1192 View All Markmelb's Edible Fruit Trees |

LydiaB says... Thanks Mark. I'm in Bellingen, northern NSW. As yet, no change in carambola in new growth and there is nothing to change in the old growth as it was fine. But as Harry said to treat the carambola again with chelates in autumn, seems to suggests that I shouldn't expect too much with this one round of treatment? | About the Author LydiaB ,,NT 14th September 2015 9:04pm #UserID: 11017 Posts: 22 View All LydiaB's Edible Fruit Trees |
