Chocolate!

    7 responses

JT starts with ...
I've recently returned from a trip to Costa Rica and my daughter wants to try her hand at growing a cocoa (chocolate) plant in our greenhouse. I believe that they finicky and probably won't grow (particularly in a greenhouse in Melbourne!) but am wondering if they are available for purchase anywhere in Australia. Thanks for your help.

Ultratropical really, like mangosteen. Very difficult to grow outside the tropics. If you have a nifty greenhouse you might be able to do it.

Have you succeeded in keeping any alive John?

Daleys has them sometimes.Pods are usually available from time to time on ebay. Usually 100% germination.
Brisbane isn't much better ,would be too much effort involved in growing even a established plant in Melbourne.

I recommend also growng from seed in your greenhouse? By doing such it may partially aclimatise? A heated Atrium as part of a house that is double glazed may retain enough heat at night to stay above 15c.
I have successfully grown and fruited and drunk my own Arabica coffee - a much prettier plant than Cacao and can take below 10c - Ive germinated seed from my coffee plant also.
If you take an occasional trip to Bali you can see Cacao - Jakfruit and Cashew growing and cheaper to get there.

I've tried from seeds on several occasions with renewed vigour only to have them kark it when the weather cools. It won't be the last time I try, they are a heck of a lot of work outside the tropics.

I wouldnt bother really here in Melb - Just buy chocolate - My Dwarf red PawPaws are size of bullet oranges - about 5 on it - will bring them inside soon - one Palmer mango on 2yo plant still growing - 7 KPs still not ripe yet either -
ps John - about 6 good survivors from Cherimoya seedlings and Giant Gauva is tiny still but alive and growing using a drink bottle glasshouse on window sill.

The Cherimoya's should be OK outside, not sure of the Giant Guava, I believe it was originally from Borneo.
