citrus against a north wall

    5 responses

Damian starts with ...
I have planted citrus trees against the north-facing wall of my concrete house.
Should I paint the wall a light colour to reflect more light or a dark colour to absorb more heat?

I vote for the dark colour Damian. In my uneducated opinion, because the aim is for sustained heat in the winter when heat is scarce, absorption would be more desirable than reflection.

Black would be better for heat in winter but what about during summer?

Citrus don't need heat in winter. In fact, oranges don't ripen well if it's not cold enough - so they don't do so well in tropical climates.

And a black wall could be too hot in summer. I live in a fruit growing area, where it gets quite cold at night - citrus do well here.

The only reason you would want more heat is if your concerned about frost and are trying to create a warmer micro climate.

You can pretty much grow all varieties of citrus here in Melbourne (thats without extra heat), If I was you, I'd definetly save the wall for your more tropical plants. :)
