Dead pomegranate or deciduous pomegranate?

    9 responses

Thithi starts with ...
I have ordered a few trees from Daley and received them today.
2 sweet leaf bushes
3 passion fruits
1 orange
1 rosavaya pomegranate
1 dragon fruit

The sweet leaf bushes look tired with a few yellow leaf but are ok. Others are in good condition. However the pomegranate looks so dead to me, no leaf at all and tiny branches look so dried out. I Am not sure if pomegranate is deciduous?

Thank markmelb.
Just wonder why Daley does not get pomegranate varieties from USA other than wonderful. USA has so many good varieties for example the Eversweet pomegranate. Here is the ad for eversweet - Very sweet, virtually seedless fruit. Red skinned pomegranate, with clear, non-staining juice and sweet, juicy pulp. Coast or inland. Grows 8-10 feet as an arching shrub or can be trained as tree or espalier. Has large, showy, orange red flowers and long blooming season with extended crops. Ripens August through October. 150 hours. Self-fruitful.
It has all i want for a pomegranate.

Thithi I found that my sweet leaf bushes hate the cold and did not survive here. Hope your do well for you. My Rosavaya is still in leaf but will shed them soon.

@mary
Thanks Mary, that is why I bought 2 sweet leaf bushes. One is to grow indoor, the other for outdoor, just in case the one outdoor would die, I still has the one in door.

@markmelb,
I just hope if more people express their interest for better pomegranates, ie. eversweet pomegranate , Daley would import them to sell. I would be among those first people who buy...:-)
I don't understand why Daley sells Vietnam seedling pomegranates. Vietnam does not have good pomegranate (btw, I am Vietnamese, that's why I know :-)

Hi Thithi,

I think you're wrong and you don't know that Vietnam does have good pomegranate. My family in Vietnam has just sent me some pomegranate seeds to grow. The fruits are small but very sweet and juicy.

Hi TMary,

I have 2 sweet leaf bushes and they're grown outdoor and under a jacaranda tree. They're 3 years old now and very healthy. They can stand cold weather in Sydney and don't drop any leaves in winter.

Hi Thao,
Good for you. Obviously you have better luck than me with the pomegranate. Lol, when I made such comment, I had thought there would be a few Vietnamese whose would strongly disagree with me :-)
It is good to hear that you have seeds of sweet pomegranate. Is pomegranate true to type?
Anyway, I always prefer seedless or soft seed pomegranates over hard seed ones.

Thao, I just got 2 sweet leaf bushes. They are not in good state at the moment. They are losing some of the leaves and leaves are yellow. Would you tell me how you take care of your sweet leaf in term of watering, soil, sun, winter protection ... Thanks in advance.

Hi Thithi,

My uncles in VN have farms to grow fruit trees in Mekong delta. All the seeds my mum sent me are from their farms. I don't know if pomegranate is true to type but I want to try, wait and see :-).

I really don't take any special care of my sweet leaf bushes at all. In first year, I kept them in pot under balcony in winter. In spring I put them on the ground, near the fence and under a big jacaranda tree. They were 50 cm high at that time. I feed them with Dynamic lifter and water 2 times per week like other vegetables. I think they get the heat from the fence so they can survive in winter.
