Doomed Citrus & Soil Testing in Perth

    6 responses

Hi everyone, it's been so long since I've been here because I've gotten lazy and discouraged. I have a spot in my garden where everything we grow dies - in particular, three citrus trees in the past year. We have citrus trees growing brilliantly in other parts of the garden, so we are starting to worry this particular bed is cursed. The leaves turn yellow and drop, and the tree eventually dies - quickly. I have taken cuttings to two nurseries in Perth, one who thought the problem was overwatering and rot, and another who thought the problem was soil ph limiting the uptake of nutrients. We have tried the treatment for both, and the plants we put in keep dying.

So my questions are! -

1) Any ideas what else might cause the trees to die like this? FYI the soil ph is quite high, but it is similar in other parts of the garden where citrus is growing well.

2) Any recommendations for places I can get my soil tested in Perth? One place I tried doesn't do "home garden" scale testing and another was prohibitively expensive ($500).

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

The Ag. Dept will test soil for you (not free) but you have to specify what you are looking for, eg pesticide residues, nutrient status etc. There are many separate tests. I doubt if you can just ask 'what's wrong with this soil?'

Let's hope people here have some ideas.

A test for pesticide residue-- catch some bushflies and put in a jar of suspect soil . Catch another lot and place in known clean soil . See how long they live in each soil type.

Thanks for the responses. To be honest, I have no idea what I'm looking for. Just suspicious that there is something strange going on in this particular spot!

Could you be planting them over any roots of big trees (may be some distance away)? That has happened to me and I've been forced to replant elsewhere. On the other hand I had a garden once with a spot about a metre x a metre where everything I planted died and there were no trees anywhere near it. Never found out why.

Thanks Jantina, we did have a large tacoma nearby that was a nightmare to get rid of. Other close young trees don't seem to have been affected. Your mysterious spot sounds exactly like mine! I've decided to just work around "the curse" and relocate some of my pot plants here.
