dragon fruit not setting fruits

    24 responses

jo starts with ...
My dragon fruit plants of more than 4 yrs of age are not fruiting, despite a few bursts of flowering. I bought it from Garden R Us and it is supposed to be self-pollinating: red. I wonder if I will regret it if I give it the axe (because of space constraints) soon as I have received a few cuttings from a friend who has been enjoying the red fruits from her dragon fruit trees. Any suggestions? Should I perhaps just leave one cutting of it and let the new cuttings grow beside it? I had it growing/crawling over the wall of the garage.

if you've seen the flowers (they come at night), then you can try hand pollination. google "hand pollinate dragon fruit" and you should get pictures or even video i'd presume

They fruit on hanging segments, train them so that they hang down otherwise they will keep on climbing up and up!

Scott,

Thanks for the infor!

Lovely pics you got there! I have yet to see a fruit on my "old" dragon!(sigh!)

My vietnamese friend gave me some of her dragon fruit cuttings and I have planted them in plastic tubs (the huge black ones sold in Bunnings) and put a meter length wood blocks for them to climb. I saw 8 flowers (unopened at this stage) on my "old" dragon that is crawling along the garage wall; I will try to hand pollinate them hopefully successfully when they are opened and ready.
cheerio.

Scott or anyone else - how long does the fall have to be for fruiting e.g. if I used an old fence pole (probably 1.2 metres above ground) - is that okay?

I planted my dragon fruit (red) right beside a very tall palm tree - thinking it would easily find its way to it (then I was going to work out some way to make it stop climbing and fall) - but it has now been growing for almost 2 years and has totally ignored the palm - it has worked by sending out three branches (each about 0.4 metres long)in different directions - none towards the palm!

Hi Kathy, I'm no expert but I can tell you what I've done.
My Pitaya pole is about 1.8 m high with a square at the top about 1m sq.
Planted cuttings at the bottom and grew them up, through it and let them sprawl over and down.
I t has worked for 3 diff. varieties so far getting good fruit.

i also prune mine every year or so if they are growing well. Seems to encourage new growth and keep disease away.

Scott - thanks very much. I'll buy a longer pole and put something at the top so the branches can easily fall over it.

In terms of sun: the plant gets morning and afternoon sun all year round, and a slight filtering of sun from the palm trees in the middle of the day (the palm tree is about 6 metres tall). I've chosen the spot because it is one of the driest areas in my yard (i.e. very good drainage as it is on a slight slope) - because a lot of the yard is mostly flat and the clay soil retains water for some time - and it rains a lot in Maleny! I've seen dragon fruit growing in similar conditions here - I assumed they fruited! Maybe I'd better check :)
Anyway - do you think that is enough sun.

Hi Scott,

My neighbours are looking for some dragon cuttings to grow. Would you sell her some when you prune your vine?

Many thanks

So im assuming the seeds wouldn't be able to germinate then? What other rare fruits do they have at the moment?

No they won't be able to germinate. Depending on whether those woolies are closed to Asian population or not but in general, they have some fruits in season from QLD.

On behalf of my neighbours many thanks for your kindness and generousity.

Ive just noticed my fluoro beetroot fleshed dragon has one bud on it which has inspired me to probably take more care of the plant. It is aprox. 150cm tall (tied up to a frame) in a fairly large pot with 4 or five 'branches' reaching that height. At the moment it shares the pot with an abundance of aloe veras. To encourage more flowers should I feed it &/or remove the aloes?
