Phil@Tyalgum says... Is there any sign of pear and cherry slug? It is a major pest of cherry trees, usually skeletonizes the leaf first before they fall off. Treat it by throwing handfuls of ash from a fire over them which shrivels them up. If not that, then don't feed the tree if it is stressed, it may well just develop a second set of leaves as the summer months progress.

Cam says... Hi Yvonne, Cherry slugs are a very common pest with some fruit trees especially for pear and cherry plants. However, it shouldn't cause great harm to your plant as long as it is healthy. The main drawback is they make the tree look unappealing. My 5 year old grafted Stella gets affected every year but it is doing fine and produced a few kilos of cherries last Summer. We were so glad we got to them before the birds this time. Another good predator plant to consider is rue, the smell of rue seems to deter insects away. My aunt used to have lots these cherry slugs on her nashi pear tree and they pretty much disappeared after she planted rue near the tree. From this observation, I planted a cutting next to my cherry too. We'll see how it goes. By the way, as you may already know, the cherry tree is a deciduous plant so the leaves do turn yellow and fall off in Winter. Could it simply be this? | About the Author Cam Cairnlea, VIC 2nd July 2010 10:51pm #UserID: 3891 Posts: 3 View All Cam's Edible Fruit Trees |
